As part of our recognition of March being National Nutrition Month, the A’viands Nutrition & Wellness Department will be offering a “Tip of the Day” as much as possible during the month. The tip is meant to inspire you to try new foods, incorporate healthier foods into your diet and increase your awareness of your overall health.

March 15, 2013 – Tip of the Day

Avocados are a heart healthy- nutrient dense fruit that has a mild non-sweet taste. They contain monounsaturated fats that decrease LDL “Bad” cholesterol while increasing HDL “Good” cholesterol. Avocados are also a good source of fiber, potassium and folate. When you purchase avocados, chose ones that have a firm skin and are free of soft spots. If you purchase an under ripe avocado place it in a paper bag at room temperature for a few days. Once ripe, place the avocado in the refrigerator and you should try to consume it within 2-3 days of placing the fruit in the refrigerator. Try a fresh cut avocado on your next sandwich, salad or taco.
